The “City of Joy” erupted in celebration today as Lionel Messi touched down in Kolkata, beginning his much-anticipated India tour. Fans lined the streets in Argentina jerseys, chanting his name, as the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner prepared to inaugurate a 70-foot iron statue depicting him lifting the 2022 FIFA World Cup trophy.
The statue, located in Lake Town near Kolkata’s replica of Big Ben, was constructed in just 40 days by sculptor Monti Paul and his team. Organisers claim it is the tallest statue of any footballer worldwide, standing 21 metres high including its base.
Security and Fan Frenzy
Authorities have deployed over 2,000 police officers to manage the crowds, with ticketed events priced from ₹4,500 upwards. Due to security concerns, Messi is expected to unveil the statue virtually from his hotel rather than in person.
A “Hola Messi” fan zone has been set up, featuring a life-sized replica of Messi seated on a throne and a recreation of his Miami home, complete with mannequins of his family.
Meeting with PM Modi and Tour Itinerary
Messi’s India visit spans four cities — Kolkata, Hyderabad, Mumbai, and New Delhi. After his Kolkata engagements, he will travel to Hyderabad for a friendly exhibition match and a concert, then to Mumbai for a charity fashion show and padel match alongside Bollywood stars and cricketers. His tour will conclude in New Delhi, where he is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Messi’s Reflections
Ahead of his arrival, Messi expressed his excitement: “India is a very special country and I have good memories from my time there 14 years ago. The fans were fantastic. India is a passionate football nation and I look forward to meeting a new generation of fans while sharing the love I have for this beautiful game.”
Editorial Note
Messi’s visit is not just a sporting spectacle but a cultural milestone for Indian football, placing Kolkata once again at the centre of global sporting attention. The unveiling of the statue — despite mixed reactions about its likeness — underscores the city’s enduring love affair with the beautiful game.
