The announcement comes amid heightened regional tensions following US‑Israeli strikes on Iran earlier in the day.

In a televised statement, the prime minister said British planes “are in the sky today” as part of regional defensive operations designed to prevent escalation and safeguard civilian life. He emphasised that the UK did not participate in the US‑Israeli strikes but has taken steps to reinforce its defensive capabilities across the region. Protections for British bases and personnel have been raised to their highest level.
Starmer condemned Iran’s retaliatory attacks, describing them as “indiscriminate” and noting that many of the targeted countries “are not parties to this conflict.” He reiterated that Iran must “never be allowed to develop a nuclear weapon,” calling the regime’s actions a direct threat not only to regional stability but also to dissidents and the Jewish community within the UK.
