Drone Strikes Disrupt UAE Transport Hubs as Regional Tensions Escalate

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — March 17, 2026
The United Arab Emirates faced renewed security concerns on Monday after drone attacks struck near Dubai International Airport and ignited fires at the strategic oil storage hub in Fujairah, according to official statements and regional media reports.

Authorities in Dubai temporarily suspended flights after a drone hit a fuel tank close to the airport, sparking a fire that civil defence teams later contained. No injuries were reported, and limited flight operations gradually resumed as emergency crews secured the area. The Dubai Civil Aviation Authority described the suspension as a precautionary measure to protect passengers and staff.

In Fujairah, one of the UAE’s most critical oil export points outside the Strait of Hormuz, officials confirmed a separate fire in an industrial zone following another drone strike. Firefighting teams worked to control the blaze, and early assessments indicated no casualties. The incident followed earlier interceptions of drones over the emirate in recent days, highlighting the growing pressure on Gulf energy infrastructure.

The attacks come amid heightened regional tensions, with Iran continuing to target Gulf transport and oil facilities in response to U.S. and Israeli military actions. Iranian officials have argued that Gulf states hosting U.S. military assets are legitimate targets, though civilian infrastructure — including airports, ports, and oil terminals — has increasingly been affected.

Across the region, several Gulf countries reported intercepting drones and missiles, while airlines issued widespread flight suspensions and diversions. Dubai Police also closed key access roads around the airport during the emergency response, advising motorists to use alternative routes.

The UAE Ministry of Defence stated it remains fully prepared to counter further threats and emphasised that security forces are coordinating closely to protect critical infrastructure. The incidents mark one of the most significant escalations in the UAE since the conflict began on February 28, with multiple attacks recorded across the country in recent weeks.

Officials urged residents and travellers to follow updates from government channels and airlines as the situation continues to evolve.
