TEL AVIV, Israel — March 22, 2026 — More than 160 people were injured after two Iranian missile strikes hit areas in southern Israel late Saturday, according to Israeli emergency services and government officials. The attack marks one of the most serious escalations between the two countries in recent months and has drawn swift international concern.

Israeli authorities said the missiles struck near the coastal city of Ashkelon and in an open area outside Be’er Sheva. Most of the injuries were caused by shrapnel, debris, and panic during the rush to reach shelters, according to Magen David Adom, Israel’s national emergency medical service. At least a dozen people were reported to be in serious condition.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stated that its air‑defense systems intercepted several additional projectiles launched from Iran, describing the incident as a “direct and deliberate attack on Israeli territory.” Military officials said they were still assessing the full extent of the damage.

Iranian state media reported that the strikes were retaliation for what Tehran described as “recent Israeli aggression” in the region. Iranian officials did not provide further details, and the claims could not be independently verified.

The exchange comes amid heightened tensions following months of sporadic cross‑border attacks involving Iranian‑backed groups and Israeli forces. Regional analysts say the latest incident risks widening an already volatile security environment.

The United Nations Secretary‑General called for “maximum restraint” from all parties, urging diplomatic channels to be used to prevent further escalation. Several European governments issued similar appeals, warning that continued strikes could destabilize the broader Middle East.

Israeli Prime Ministerial officials said the security cabinet would convene an emergency meeting to discuss potential responses. “Israel will defend itself against any threat,” a government spokesperson said, adding that the country was coordinating with international partners.

Hospitals in southern Israel remained on high alert Sunday as medical teams treated the injured and prepared for potential additional emergencies. Local authorities urged residents to follow safety instructions and remain near protected areas.

The situation continues to develop, and officials in both countries have signaled that further statements may follow as more information becomes available.
