Torrential Gulf Storms Trigger Regional Alerts as UAE Braces for a Week of Unstable Weather

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates — March 23, 2026
Heavy rain, strong winds, and bursts of thunderstorms swept across parts of the United Arab Emirates and Qatar on Monday, prompting renewed warnings from national weather agencies as the Gulf region enters a period of prolonged atmospheric instability.

The UAE’s National Center of Meteorology (NCM) said the country should expect “continued unsettled conditions,” including rainfall of varying intensity, dust storms reducing visibility, and occasional thundercloud formations moving in from the west. Authorities have placed emergency teams on standby, particularly in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and the northern emirates, where localized flooding is more likely.

In Qatar, the Civil Aviation Authority reported similar conditions, noting that strong winds had accompanied early‑morning showers across Doha and surrounding areas. Officials advised residents to avoid low‑lying roads and to monitor updates as the weather system continues to develop.

Authorities Urge Caution

Municipalities across both countries have issued public advisories urging motorists to drive slowly, avoid wadis and flood‑prone routes, and secure outdoor items that could be blown away by sudden gusts.
Schools and government offices in several emirates said they were prepared to shift to remote operations if conditions worsen, though no closures had been announced as of Monday evening.

Emergency response units, including police and civil defense teams, said they were coordinating closely with meteorological agencies. “We are monitoring the situation hour by hour,” an Abu Dhabi Civil Defense spokesperson said, adding that teams had already responded to minor waterlogging incidents.

A Broader Regional Pattern

Meteorologists say the current system is part of a wider pattern of seasonal instability affecting the Arabian Peninsula. Moist air from the Arabian Sea, combined with cooler upper‑level winds, has created conditions favorable for thunderstorms and sudden downpours.

While heavy rain is relatively uncommon in the Gulf, such episodes have become more frequent in recent years. Climate specialists in the region note that rapid urban development, combined with shifting weather patterns, has increased the impact of short‑lived storms.

Residents Share Experiences

Across social media, residents posted videos of dark clouds rolling over city skylines, brief hail showers in some inland areas, and strong winds kicking up sand along highways. Many expressed concern about driving conditions, particularly during evening commutes.

“I’ve never seen the sky turn that dark so quickly,” said a Dubai resident who encountered heavy rain on Sheikh Zayed Road. “Visibility dropped in seconds.”

More Rain Expected This Week

Forecasts indicate that the unstable weather may persist through the week, with the heaviest rainfall expected in the western and northern parts of the UAE. Qatar may see intermittent showers and strong winds as the system shifts eastward.

Authorities in both countries urged the public to rely on official channels — including the NCM, Qatar Meteorology Department, and local emergency services — for accurate updates.

As the region prepares for several more days of unsettled skies, officials emphasized that early precautions remain the best safeguard against sudden weather changes.
