Colombo – A special protest was held today in front of the Parliament premises against the continued repression of journalists and activists from the North-East.

The protestors, including journalists and civil society activists, strongly emphasized that the government’s oppressive actions are a direct threat to democracy and media freedom.
The issue of Kumanan was highlighted in particular, with protestors drawing attention to the harassment, surveillance, and restrictions he has been facing, which obstruct his right to work freely.
Speaking at the protest, participants declared, “The government and military are attempting to silence the voices of journalists in the North-East. This cannot be accepted and must be brought to the attention of the international community.”
Several Members of Parliament also joined the protest in solidarity, extending their support. The central demand of the demonstration was that the government must immediately put an end to the repression against journalists and take concrete steps to safeguard media freedom.
