Tamil Activism at the UN Human Rights Council Has Turned into Empty Showpieces

 Written by: Eelaththu Nilavan

For the past sixteen years, the so-called “side events” held at the UN Human Rights Council have brought no tangible benefit to the Tamil people. These events have gradually turned into performances of deception—fooling not only the world, but our own people.

Most participants use these occasions merely to take photographs and project themselves as “prominent figures” on social media. The current reality is that Tamils rely on NGOs just to gain entry into the Human Rights Council premises, dine in the building’s cafeterias, take pictures with foreign delegates, hand over pamphlets, and quietly walk away.

Anyone who dares to go beyond these superficial acts and attempt genuine protest is swiftly removed from the premises by the security officers.
