KOZHIKODE, March 9, 2026 — Healthcare services in several private hospitals across Kerala faced significant disruption on Monday as thousands of private‑sector nurses launched widespread protests demanding better wages, regulated working hours, and improved staffing norms. Major demonstrations were reported in Kozhikode and Kannur, where nurses marched in large numbers, drawing public attention to long‑standing grievances within the state’s private healthcare sector.

The strike, organised by multiple nursing unions, entered a more aggressive phase today after talks with hospital management associations failed to produce a breakthrough. Protesters accused private hospitals of ignoring repeated appeals for fair compensation and humane working conditions, despite rising workloads and increasing patient inflow.

Union representatives said that many nurses in private hospitals continue to receive salaries far below industry standards, with some reportedly earning less than entry‑level wages recommended by state labour guidelines. “We are not asking for anything extraordinary. We are asking for dignity, safety, and wages that reflect the critical work we do,” said a union leader in Kozhikode, addressing a gathering of striking nurses outside a major multispecialty hospital.

In Kannur, hundreds of nurses staged a sit‑in protest near the district hospital junction, holding placards and chanting slogans calling for immediate government intervention. Traffic movement in parts of the city slowed as the demonstration grew through the afternoon.

Hospital managements, however, expressed concern over the impact of the strike on patient care. Several private facilities reported delays in routine services, reduced outpatient operations, and rescheduled elective procedures. Emergency departments continued to function, but administrators admitted that staffing shortages were placing additional strain on available personnel.

The Kerala Government has urged both sides to return to negotiations, emphasising the need to protect patient welfare while acknowledging the legitimacy of the nurses’ demands. Health department officials indicated that a fresh round of talks may be convened later this week.

For now, the strike has highlighted the widening gap between the state’s celebrated healthcare reputation and the working conditions of those who sustain it. With no immediate resolution in sight, patients and hospital administrators alike are bracing for continued disruptions in the days ahead.

Bengaluru, March 9, 2026

The Karnataka government has issued the final reservation notification for all 369 wards across the five newly formed Bengaluru city corporations, marking a major procedural milestone ahead of long-pending civic elections. However, the announcement has reignited debate over the fairness and legality of the quota distribution, with several political groups and civil society organisations signalling potential court challenges.

A Six-Month Exercise Reaches Completion

The reservation process—conducted under the Greater Bengaluru Governance Act, 2024—involved extensive ward-level scrutiny, public objections, and a review committee assessment. The final list reflects 84 changes from the draft notification issued on January 8, with the highest number of alterations occurring in the Bengaluru West Corporation (33 wards). Other corporations saw changes as follows:

• North: 18 wards
• South: 14 wards
• East: 12 wards
• Central: 7 wards

Officials stated that the review committee examined all objections and incorporated changes deemed valid, though critics argue that the revisions largely reshuffle categories between wards rather than address systemic concerns.

Vertical Reservation: Only One Corporation Meets 50% Requirement

A key point of contention is the vertical reservation percentage, which determines the distribution of seats among Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), Backward Classes (A & B), and General categories.
According to the final notification:

• East City Corporation: 50% vertical reservation (the only corporation meeting the mandated threshold)
• Central City Corporation: 49.2%
• North City Corporation: 48.6%
• West City Corporation: 42.8%
• South City Corporation: 44.4%

Opposition leaders and activists argue that the government ignored widespread criticism of these percentages during the draft stage, leaving the final matrix vulnerable to judicial scrutiny.

Women’s Quota Falls Short of Mandated 50%

The notification reserves 176 out of 369 wards for women, amounting to 47.69%, below the legally mandated 50% representation.
Breakdown by corporation:

• West City Corporation: Close to 50%
• The other four corporations: Between 46% and 48%

Women’s groups have expressed disappointment, noting that the shortfall persists despite repeated objections and the government’s assurances of compliance.

Category-Wise Distribution

The final reservation list allocates wards as follows:

• General: 198
• Scheduled Castes: 43
• Scheduled Tribes: 7
• Backward Class A: 97
• Backward Class B: 24

These figures reflect the demographic and statutory requirements but have nonetheless sparked debate over whether the distribution adequately represents marginalised communities.

Political Implications and Ward-Level Shifts

Several wards represented by opposition MLAs—such as Malleswaram, Mahadevapura, and Bommanahalli—saw more reservation changes than those represented by the ruling party. Meanwhile, constituencies like Shanthinagar, BTM Layout, and Shivajinagar saw no changes at all.

Such shifts could significantly influence candidate eligibility and electoral strategies, with some aspirants now forced to reconsider their plans.

Government’s Defence

The Urban Development Department maintains that the reservation committee adhered strictly to the Act and relevant government orders. Officials emphasised that all objections were reviewed and that only valid suggestions were incorporated.

However, critics argue that the government has merely rearranged reservations between wards without addressing the core issue: the overall percentage shortfalls.

Next Steps: Elections on the Horizon

With the reservation process complete, the responsibility now shifts to the Karnataka State Election Commission (SEC), which is expected to publish the final electoral rolls on April 6. The state has informed the Supreme Court that civic polls will be conducted before June 30, ending a delay that dates back to September 2020.

Bengaluru, March 9, 2026

The Karnataka government has categorically ruled out the closure of the Karnataka Silk Industries Corporation (KSIC) Filature Factory at T. Narasipura and has officially withdrawn its earlier proposal to construct a sports stadium on the factory premises. The announcement was made in the Legislative Assembly by Sericulture and Animal Husbandry Minister K. Venkatesh, bringing clarity after weeks of speculation and unrest.

Government Clarifies: No Closure, No Stadium

Minister Venkatesh told the Assembly that the 114-year-old factory—established in 1912 by Nalvadi Krishnaraja Wodeyar—will continue operations without disruption. He emphasized that the government intends to increase production capacity, not reduce it, given the surging demand for Mysore Silk sarees.

The Minister also confirmed that the plan to build a stadium on approximately five acres of KSIC land has been scrapped after it became clear that officials had provided misleading information regarding land suitability.

Protests and Public Pressure Influenced the Decision

The reversal follows a fortnight-long strike by KSIC employees, supported by environmental groups, heritage activists, and Opposition leaders. Workers argued that the stadium project would threaten the factory’s operations, disrupt water supply lines, and obstruct future expansion plans. A technical report by the KSIC Managing Director had also warned that the land was essential for installing an Effluent Treatment Plant and scaling up production.

Opposition Leader R. Ashoka accused the government of risking the legacy of Mysore Silk, which holds a prestigious Geographical Indication (GI) tag. He hailed the withdrawal as a “victory for workers and heritage protection.”

A Heritage Industry With Soaring Demand

KSIC’s performance data underscores its importance:

• Net profits: ₹46.75 crore (2022–23), ₹73.40 crore (2023–24), and ₹101.15 crore (2024–25).
• Sarees produced (2022–25): 3,10,667
• Sarees sold: 3,09,659 (over 99% sales efficiency)

Demand remains so high that women reportedly queue for hours outside KSIC showrooms, and the government is considering limiting online sales to prioritize local buyers. Production is being ramped up with additional looms to meet the daily demand of 300–400 sarees.

Royal Family and Local Leaders Welcomed the Assurance

Pramoda Devi Wadiyar of the erstwhile Mysore royal family expressed relief after receiving assurances from district authorities that the factory would remain untouched. She noted that the decision aligns with public sentiment and the cultural significance of Mysore Silk.

What Comes Next

The government has committed to:

• Preserving the KSIC Filature Factory as a heritage industrial asset
• Modernising production units in T. Narasipura, Mysuru, and Channapatna
• Exploring measures to bridge the demand–supply gap
• Ensuring no future encroachment on KSIC land without a thorough technical evaluation

With the stadium plan officially abandoned, KSIC employees have resumed work, though supporting organisations continue to monitor the government’s follow-through on its assurances.

RAJAMAHENDRAVARAM, March 9:

The death toll linked to acute renal failure in Rajamahendravaram climbed to 11 on Sunday, following the death of 73‑year‑old Senapathi Ramalaxmi, who passed away while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in the city.

According to hospital sources, Ramalaxmi had been admitted with severe renal complications and was receiving intensive medical care. Despite efforts by the medical team, her condition deteriorated, leading to her death on Sunday morning.

Health officials confirmed that her case has been added to the growing number of fatalities associated with acute renal failure reported in the region over recent days. Authorities are continuing to monitor the situation closely, though no official statement has yet been issued regarding the underlying causes contributing to the spike in cases.

Local health departments are expected to conduct further assessments to determine whether environmental, medical, or other external factors may be linked to the rising number of renal‑related deaths. Families of affected patients have urged authorities to expedite investigations and ensure adequate medical support for those currently undergoing treatment.

The community remains on alert as hospitals continue to report new admissions with similar symptoms. Public health officials have advised residents—particularly the elderly and those with pre‑existing health conditions—to seek immediate medical attention if they experience signs of renal distress.

Further updates are anticipated as the investigation progresses.

Amaravati, March 9, 2026

Amid escalating hostilities in West Asia triggered by the ongoing US–Israel–Iran conflict, more than 500 people from Andhra Pradesh have returned home after being stranded across several Gulf nations. According to APNRTS president Ravi Vemuru, the majority of those affected were transit passengers or individuals travelling on temporary visas who found themselves unable to return due to sudden airport closures, flight cancellations, and regional security concerns.

Coordinated Repatriation Efforts

APNRTS facilitated the return of nearly 400 individuals who reached out for assistance, while many others managed to travel independently via commercial flights.

Passengers were repatriated from the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and Oman through a mix of direct flights and carefully arranged transit routes. In several cases, stranded travellers were moved from Dubai to Muscat before boarding flights to India, while some were flown directly from locations such as Fujairah on private services.
The Andhra Pradesh Bhavan in New Delhi also played a supporting role, helping coordinate travel arrangements and liaising with central authorities to ensure safe passage for those affected.

Pastors Still Stranded in Bahrain

Despite the large-scale return, a small group of around 50 pastors who had travelled to Bahrain for a conference remain stranded due to the absence of direct flights and procedural hurdles in securing transit visas. Authorities are exploring alternative routes through Saudi Arabia, including possible transfers via Dammam or Riyadh, to bring them home safely.

Essential Workers Remain in the Gulf

While temporary visitors and transit passengers have largely returned, most Indians employed in Gulf nations—particularly those in oil and gas, government roles, and other essential sectors—continue to remain at their workplaces. Classified as essential workers, they are not permitted to leave their posts despite the ongoing regional instability.

State Government Oversight and Support

The Andhra Pradesh government has been actively monitoring the situation. Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu earlier directed officials to coordinate closely with the Centre, Indian embassies, APNRTS, and Real Time Governance Systems (RTGS) to ensure the safety and repatriation of Telugu people stranded in conflict-affected regions. A 24×7 helpline and temporary accommodation facilities have been set up to support those seeking assistance.

A Continuing Humanitarian Challenge

Although the majority of stranded Andhra residents have now returned, the situation remains fluid. Authorities continue to work on securing safe passage for those still stuck abroad, while advising expatriates in the region to remain sheltered and follow embassy advisories until normal flight operations resume.
