Lincoln Bishop Suspended After Arrest in Ongoing Sexual Assault Investigation

The Bishop of Lincoln, Stephen Conway, has been arrested as part of a sexual assault inquiry and subsequently suspended from all ministerial duties by the Church of England, the institution confirmed.

Church officials stated that the suspension is a standard safeguarding measure triggered automatically when a senior cleric becomes the subject of a criminal investigation. While the Church did not disclose details of the allegations, it emphasised that the action “does not imply guilt” and is intended to ensure transparency and protect all parties during the inquiry.

According to sources familiar with the case, police arrested Bishop Conway earlier this week. Authorities have not released further information, citing the sensitivity of the investigation and the need to protect the identities of those involved. No charges have yet been announced.

In a brief statement, the Diocese of Lincoln acknowledged the arrest and confirmed that the bishop “will not be undertaking public ministry while the investigation is ongoing.” The Church added that it is cooperating fully with law enforcement and reiterated its commitment to safeguarding protocols across all dioceses.

Bishop Conway, who has served in senior roles within the Church of England for several decades, became Bishop of Lincoln after previously holding the position of Bishop of Ely. His tenure has included oversight of clergy, diocesan governance, and community outreach across one of the country’s largest rural dioceses.

The Church of England stressed that it would not comment further while the police inquiry continues. Investigators have urged the public to avoid speculation and allow due process to take its course.

The case remains active, and updates are expected as the investigation progresses.
