CHENNAI, India — 17 March 2026
Tamil Nadu is set for a day of mixed weather conditions, with light to moderate rainfall expected in several coastal and interior districts, according to early updates from the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
🌦️ Coastal Regions Likely to See Showers
IMD officials in Chennai said a weak easterly trough over the Bay of Bengal is bringing moisture inland, increasing the chance of scattered rain along the state’s eastern belt.
- Chennai, Cuddalore, and Nagapattinam may experience brief spells of rain, mostly during the afternoon and evening.
- Cloudy skies are expected to keep daytime temperatures slightly lower than usual for mid‑March.
🌡️ Warm and Humid in the Interior
Districts such as Madurai, Tiruchirappalli, and Karur are likely to remain mostly dry, with temperatures hovering between 33°C and 36°C.
Humidity levels, however, are expected to stay high, especially during the early morning and late evening hours.
🌩️ Thunderstorms Possible in the Western Belt
The IMD’s Coimbatore centre noted that Coimbatore, Erode, and Nilgiris districts could see isolated thunderstorms due to moisture buildup along the Western Ghats.
Officials said these developments are typical for the season and are not linked to any major weather disturbance.
🌬️ Light Winds Across the State
Light to moderate winds from the east‑southeast are expected throughout the day. Fishermen along the Tamil Nadu coast have been advised to check local marine forecasts before venturing out, though no warnings have been issued.
📡 IMD Monitoring Continues
Meteorologists said they will continue to monitor the easterly flow and update forecasts if conditions change. “These are routine pre‑summer variations. We expect similar patterns over the next few days,” an IMD spokesperson said.
