Gold Prices Edge Higher in Tamil Nadu Amid Global Market Cues

CHENNAI, India — 17 March 2026
Gold prices in Tamil Nadu saw a mild uptick on Tuesday, reflecting steady gains in international markets and a slightly weaker Indian rupee, according to early estimates from local jewellers and bullion traders.

Retail jewellers in Chennai reported that the price of 22‑carat gold hovered around ₹6,350 per gram, while 24‑carat gold was quoted near ₹6,930 per gram. Traders noted that prices may continue to fluctuate through the week as global markets respond to signals from the U.S. Federal Reserve and ongoing geopolitical tensions.

Local bullion associations said the rise was modest but consistent with international spot gold, which has been trading firmer due to increased investor interest in safe‑haven assets. “We are seeing a cautious but steady demand from retail buyers, especially with the wedding season approaching,” said a Chennai‑based bullion dealer, adding that wholesale demand remains stable.

Analysts attribute the current trend to a combination of factors:

  • Global gold prices have strengthened as investors look for stability amid uncertainty in major economies.
  • Currency movements, particularly the rupee’s slight depreciation against the U.S. dollar, have made imported gold marginally more expensive.
  • Seasonal demand in South India traditionally supports prices during the first half of the year.

The Tamil Nadu Jewellers Federation noted that while prices remain elevated compared to last year, consumer sentiment has not weakened significantly. Many buyers are opting for smaller quantities or lightweight jewellery designs to manage higher costs.

Market observers say gold prices in the state will continue to track international trends closely. Traders expect clearer direction later this week once global economic data and central bank statements are released.
