HEARTFELT TRIBUTE AND DEEPEST CONDOLENCES TO DIRECTOR IMAYAM BHARATHIRAJA

The news of the passing of legendary filmmaker Director Imayam Bharathiraja on 10 June 2026 has brought profound sorrow and shock to countless Tamils across the world. Today, Tamil cinema has lost one of its greatest visionaries, and the Tamil nation has lost a passionate voice that consistently stood for the rights, dignity, and identity of the Tamil people.

Bharathiraja was not merely a film director. He was a cultural revolutionary who transformed Tamil cinema by bringing the life, traditions, emotions, and landscapes of rural Tamil Nadu to the forefront of the silver screen. At a time when the Tamil film industry was heavily influenced by external trends and narratives, he pioneered a new cinematic movement rooted in Tamil culture, Tamil soil, and the lived experiences of ordinary Tamil people.

His iconic greeting, “My Dear Tamil People”, delivered with warmth, affection, and a deep sense of belonging, continues to resonate in the hearts of millions. Through his films, Bharathiraja celebrated Tamil identity, preserved rural traditions, and gave a voice to communities whose stories had rarely been represented in mainstream cinema.

His contributions to Indian and Tamil cinema earned him numerous prestigious awards and honours, including some of the highest recognitions bestowed upon artists by the Government of India. Yet, Bharathiraja’s legacy extends far beyond the world of cinema.

He was never content to remain confined within the boundaries of the film industry. Throughout his life, he actively participated in social, cultural, and political struggles concerning the welfare and rights of the Tamil people. Whether it was the struggle for Tamil linguistic rights, the fight for justice in the Cauvery water dispute, or campaigns to save the lives of Tamil prisoners, Bharathiraja consistently stood alongside the people.

Most notably, he was a steadfast supporter of the rights and aspirations of the Eelam Tamil people. He openly condemned the atrocities committed against Tamils during the Sri Lankan civil war and repeatedly called for justice for the victims of the Tamil genocide. The protest led by Bharathiraja in Rameswaram, where members of the Tamil film industry gathered to condemn the suffering of Eelam Tamils, became one of the most significant acts of solidarity in recent Tamil political history.

He courageously used his stature and influence to amplify the voices of oppressed Tamils, earning the respect and admiration of Tamils worldwide. For many Eelam Tamils, Bharathiraja was more than an artist; he was a sincere friend and a compassionate advocate who never hesitated to speak out in their defence.

Today, although Bharathiraja is no longer with us in person, his contributions to cinema, culture, and the Tamil national cause will endure for generations. His films will continue to inspire audiences, his words will continue to echo in public memory, and his commitment to Tamil identity will remain a source of inspiration for future generations.

Tamil cinema has lost a giant. The Tamil nation has lost a fearless voice. Tamils around the world have lost a steadfast supporter and a beloved cultural icon.

We extend our deepest condolences on the passing of Director Imayam Bharathiraja.

May his soul rest in eternal peace.

Farewell, Director Imayam.

We bid you goodbye with gratitude and respect. Though you leave us today, your memories, your artistic achievements, and your unwavering commitment to the Tamil people will live on forever.

Your legacy is eternal. Your contribution is unforgettable.

“Legends never truly die; they live forever through the people they inspired and the causes they championed.”
