In a significant step toward modernising Sri Lanka’s public transport network, 104 brand‑new FOTON Metro buses were officially handed over to the Sri Lankan government at a ceremony held in Beijing today. The fleet, manufactured by the Chinese automotive giant FOTON, is expected to strengthen intercity and urban mobility across the island.
The handover event was attended by senior officials from both nations, including representatives of China’s Ministry of Commerce and Sri Lanka’s Embassy in Beijing. Addressing the gathering, officials emphasised that the new buses form part of a broader cooperation programme aimed at improving Sri Lanka’s transport infrastructure and easing congestion in major cities.
According to transport sector sources, the buses are equipped with upgraded safety systems, improved fuel efficiency, and enhanced passenger comfort features. The fleet is expected to be deployed across high‑demand routes, particularly in Colombo, Kandy, Galle, and Jaffna, where public transport shortages have been a persistent challenge.
Sri Lankan officials noted that the addition of these buses will help stabilise services affected by ageing fleets and rising maintenance costs. They also highlighted that the move aligns with the government’s long‑term plan to transition toward a more reliable, environmentally conscious public transport system.
The delivery marks another milestone in Sri Lanka–China bilateral cooperation, particularly in infrastructure and mobility development. The buses are scheduled to arrive in Colombo in the coming weeks, after which the National Transport Commission will begin phased deployment.
